First blog assignment

 My name is Kelsey Brown. I’m from Tennessee but have lived in seven different states. I’ve been in Alaska almost two years now. I have an older and younger brother. I’m on my last semester before I’m accepted into the nursing program. I love reading and hiking. I have a yellow lab named Winston. I’ve been married for a little over ten years. I met my husband while we were in middle school.




The Starry Night is one of my favorite paintings. I use to draw and paint a lot while I was in high school. I took art one and two and really enjoyed it. I found myself to hard on myself a lot of the times when it comes to my art. I often find myself doodling on random paper when I get bored. I love going to art museums, well any type of museums. My husband was able to go to a live art show about Van Gogh and sent me videos of that Starry Night.

    I'm headed to Tennessee in April! I'll be in Memphis for an extended weekend for a ukulele event. Last time I was there I didn't go to any museums. I'm going to change that this time around. Like you, I love museums.

    I like starry night because it does not try to be a photo realistic depiction of the night sky. Instead, it seems to capture the feel of watching the night go on as the stars swirl like they are dancing.

  “Saint Jerome Writing By Caravaggio”      When it comes to art work, I find myself more drawn to the darker pieces. I immediately fell in love with Caravaggio’s painting Saint Jerome Writing, also called Saint Jerome in His Study or simply Saint Jerome. He created this oil painting in 1605-1606 and is found in the Galleria Borghese in Rome. The background of this painting is about St. Jerome, a doctor of the church. In the painting he is seen studying the Sacred Scriptures which, according to tradition, he translated from Greek to Latin. I love how simplistic the art is but also still eye catching. Postmodern : Pop Art

      The Postmodern Era is marked by art movements that intended to contradict some elements of Modernism.  Postmodern art is believed to encompass conceptual art, intermedia, multimedia, and installation art, just to name a few.      Before understanding the elements and impact of Postmodern art, it is important to understand Modernism. Modernism is characterized by industrialization and social progressive movements. Just as Postmodern Art is somewhat of a rebellion against Modernism, Modernism was a movement that sought to go against art that preceded it. The movement took place in the midst of much anxiety and hardships that took place during and after World War I.  Postmodern art still shares some similar elements that Modernism stood for. Romanticism is a type of art where the artist emphasized that sense and emotions - not simply reason and order - were equally important means of understanding and experiencing the world. Romanticism celebrated the individual imagination and intuition in the enduring search for individual rights and liberty.  A popular technique that Romantic painters used was small, close strokes of complementary colors.  “Abbey among Oak Trees, Caspar David Friedrich”    Friedrich painted “Abbey among Oak Trees” in 1809 through 1810 in Dresden.  This is an example of romanticism because you get the feeling of sadness and desolation. The sun is going down behind the horizon as fog emerges the ground. The dead trees rise above the fog and surrounds the crumbling ruins of a gothic abbey.
