Joseon dynasty was the last and longest-lived imperial dynasty in Korea. It started in 1392 and lasted till 1910. It was founded by Gen. Yi Seung-Gye, who established the capital at Hanyang, today we call that Seoul. The kingdom was named Joseon for the state of the same name that had dominated the Korean Peninsula in ancient times.  “Scholar in a Lakeside Pavilion “ by Samoje  The first piece I picked is titled “ Scholar in a Lakeside Pavilion” by Samoje. Samoje is the style of a Joseon-period artist. I wasn’t able to find his name. There were two very similar paintings by the artist. Both were done in black and white and is done by a hanging scroll. I like that it’s done in black and white and can be hard to read.  “Small Landscape and Figures” by  Lee Kyoung-yun, Joseon Dynasty, 16th century Lee Kyoung-yun created nine pieces of work  in the 16th century and kept them in one album with twenty-one sides. It’s currently at the Horim Museum in Korea.  It appears to be done on some bur

Postmodern : Pop Art

The Postmodern Era is marked by art movements that intended to contradict some elements of Modernism.  Postmodern art is believed to encompass conceptual art, intermedia, multimedia, and installation art, just to name a few.      Before understanding the elements and impact of Postmodern art, it is important to understand Modernism. Modernism is characterized by industrialization and social progressive movements. Just as Postmodern Art is somewhat of a rebellion against Modernism, Modernism was a movement that sought to go against art that preceded it. The movement took place in the midst of much anxiety and hardships that took place during and after World War I.  Postmodern art still shares some similar elements that Modernism stood for. However, it is even more ironic and seeks to go against the grain even more so than Modern art did.  I decided to represent Postmodern art through Pop art.     Pop art is a movement that emerged in the United States during the late 1950’s to pre

Romantic Era

Romanticism is a type of art where the artist emphasized that sense and emotions - not simply reason and order - were equally important means of understanding and experiencing the world. Romanticism celebrated the individual imagination and intuition in the enduring search for individual rights and liberty.  A popular technique that Romantic painters used was small, close strokes of complementary colors.  “Abbey among Oak Trees, Caspar David Friedrich”    Friedrich painted “Abbey among Oak Trees” in 1809 through 1810 in Dresden.  This is an example of romanticism because you get the feeling of sadness and desolation. The sun is going down behind the horizon as fog emerges the ground. The dead trees rise above the fog and surrounds the crumbling ruins of a gothic abbey. A sense of terror overcomes the landscape as a funeral takes place. This painting captures many themes that are part of Romanticism. For example the color palette is muted tones of yellow and grey.  I would absolutely ow

During the Classical Era, there were two popular style of art: Rococo and Neoclassical.  There was a distinct divide in artistic interpretations and depictions during the Classical era. The Rococo style was a late 18th century art movement that followed the Baroque period. It was characterized by an incredible amount of ornate elaboration, pastel, pinky and gold coloring, lacy elements applied to clothing or structures, and a tendency to depict romantic, sexual, and dreamy situations. Many in support of Neoclassicism from this era viewed the content and message behind many Rococo pieces to be immoral and frowned upon- this perspective served as a catalyst for the Neoclassical era art.  Neoclassical art was arguably a “jab” back at Rococo style art. Those in support of Neoclassicism generally viewed that “art should be cerebral, not sensual” (Gersh-Nesic, 2014). In response, Neoclassical art was smooth, rational, and clean, often laden with serious subject matter. Ethical concerns sur

“Saint Jerome Writing By Caravaggio”      When it comes to art work, I find myself more drawn to the darker pieces. I immediately fell in love with Caravaggio’s painting Saint Jerome Writing, also called Saint Jerome in His Study or simply Saint Jerome. He created this oil painting in 1605-1606 and is found in the Galleria Borghese in Rome. The background of this painting is about St. Jerome, a doctor of the church. In the painting he is seen studying the Sacred Scriptures which, according to tradition, he translated from Greek to Latin. I love how simplistic the art is but also still eye catching. This is an art piece you can see from across the room from how much contrast it has. It shows two large fields of color. Warm tones - such as the skin of the Saint and the mantle, and cold tones- the skull and the white cloth standing out against the open book. It portrays a dialogue between life and death and past and present. I think that’s one reason why I love this piece so much. To me

Leonardo da Vinci “ Vitruvian Man’s”     Leonardo da Vinci’s drawing called “Vitruvian Man’s” was created in 1490 in Milan. It is a well known drawing that has been seen by millions. From being featured in movies like the “Thirteen Ghost”. For me this is a piece of art that may not be very detailed but conveys a lot of emotion. It’s only three elements. A circle, square and a male figure. It has a sort of creepy vibe that draws my attention to every detail. The drawing visualizes an idea of human proportions. Which is why I get the creepy vibes. From the four arms and shoulders touching the circle and squares and the four legs. If you were to zoom into the face you will see so much detail. The eyes seem to peer into yours. I’d love to add this to my small collection of art work. One thing that I learned about this drawing is that Da Vinci wasn’t sure if he’d show this to anyone. It’s literally just on a plain white piece of paper, which I believe makes it more special. Leonardo da Vinci

My name is Kelsey Brown. I’m from Tennessee but have lived in seven different states. I’ve been in Alaska almost two years now. I have an older and younger brother. I’m on my last semester before I’m accepted into the nursing program. I love reading and hiking. I have a yellow lab named Winston. I’ve been married for a little over ten years. I met my husband while we were in middle school. The Starry Night is one of my favorite paintings. I use to draw and paint a lot while I was in high school. I took art one and two and really enjoyed it. I found myself to hard on myself a lot of the times when it comes to my art. I often find myself doodling on random paper when I get bored. I love going to art museums, well any type of museums. My husband was able to go to a live art show about Van Gogh and sent me videos of that Starry Night.  More of Van Gogh
